The most useful intelligence in a browser is the kind that never has to leave your device. ROS was designed around that idea: the work that protects you, organises you and finds things for you happens on your Mac or iPhone, at the edge.

What we mean by the edge

In computing, the edge is where you are: your laptop, your phone, the device in your hand. Work done there needs no round trip to a server, so it is immediate. And what never leaves your device cannot be collected, sold or leaked on the way.

So when we built ROS, we asked one question of every feature: can this happen on the device? Most of the time, the answer was yes.

Blocking before the page draws

The Shield runs inside ROS, at the network level. Ads and trackers are stopped before the page draws, not hidden after it loads, so they never download at all. The counts of what it stopped stay on your device too.

History that answers in milliseconds

Your history is a small database that ROS keeps in memory and saves sealed. As you type an address, ROS searches 20,000 pages in about two milliseconds. Nothing is sent anywhere to make that happen.

The pictures of your tabs, shown when you hover over them, are taken on your device as you leave each tab and kept in memory only, never on disk.

Memory that manages itself

ROS watches how much memory each tab uses. Tabs you have not looked at for 30 minutes go to sleep and give their memory back, and when the system runs low they sleep early. Tabs that are playing sound, on a call, downloading or holding something you typed are left alone.

A store that searches on your device

The ROS Extension Store downloads its whole catalog and searches it on your device. What you look for there never leaves it.

Checks that reveal almost nothing

ROS can tell you when a password has appeared in a known leak, without sending the password. It sends only the first five characters of the password’s fingerprint, and the match happens on your device.

Passwords fill only on secure pages, only in the page itself, and only after Touch ID or Face ID.

Sealed on the device

History, open tabs, bookmarks, groups and site settings are encrypted with AES-256-GCM, using a key that is made on your device and kept in its Keychain, never synced. Even the files that hold site icons are named by a hash, so the folder does not list the sites you visit.

What never leaves your device cannot be collected, sold or leaked on the way.

Where agents fit

Rosanne’s agents are coming to ROS. Our aim for them is the principle everything else in ROS is built on: do on your device what can be done there, send only what a task needs, and ask before anything important. Before they ship, we will say exactly what they send.
